My year in review!

As the new year fast approaches its time to reflect on the past year and also wonder what the next one will bring! This year flew but it was amazing! I have achieved so much in 12 months that it amazes me how I managed to fit it all in! Each month had something to be proud of.

In a quick recap, I turned 40, launched my own skincare range New You & co created a new medical procedure for menopausal women called Rejuvula with my colleague Dr Daniel Sister. I have appeared in media globally, been invited onto This Morning and started working in London on a Monday. I won a fantastic prize with Bank of Ireland and saw my slogan for the Leinster Rugby team on a flag flying high in Aviva and also in Toulon. My blog was a finalist in The Blog Awards Ireland 2015 and the Claudia McGloin Clinic was a finalist in the Best Clinic Ireland category of The Aesthetic Awards 2015 in London. I also got to meet some amazing people throughout the year and formed some fabulous new friendships!

It's impossible to list everything but a snapshot of my best bits is below.

I do hope next year will be even better and going by events lined up so far it looks to be awesome!

Happy New Year! Here's to a fabulous 2016! X

I nearly had life changing surgery when all I really needed was a hormone pill…

Being told that I needed to have a hysterectomy was bad enough but when I showed my medical friend my blood results, I was horrified to discover that the diagnosis was completely wrong.

I was diagnosed with endometriosis but shockingly I hadn’t even had a laparoscopy. I’d been to theatre for a D&C, hysteroscopy and the mirena coil but incredibly no one had ever considered checking my hormone levels.

None of the procedures I had worked and when I was initially told that I needed a hysterectomy, I took things into my own hands and had a full MOT of blood tests done including getting my hormone levels checked.

Thankfully for me, I know a hormone specialist, Dr Daniel Sister. He reviewed my blood results and promptly informed me that I had no progesterone in my body and that I didn’t need a hysterectomy just Bio-identical HRT! He further came to my rescue and prescribed me these hormones when none of the doctors in Ireland would.

I’m now on my fourth gynaecologist and thankfully she listens to me and does prescribe me my hormones. In fact, I have also just discovered that I’ve been completely misdiagnosed and that two further gynae conditions were completely missed!

Thanks to my medical knowledge and contacts I got lucky but what worries me is how many other women are going through unnecessary major surgery when a simple prescription of HRT would sort things out for them.

Botched Lip Fillers

You have probably heard and read a lot about botched fillers and here's what botched lip fillers look like. Apart from the swelling, there's horrendous lumps each side of the top lip and in the middle. Not pretty eh?

This is not what lips should look like post treatment! While there is always the possibility of swelling, bruising and bleeding from the injection sites which will subside 48-72 hours post procedure, these lumps should not be there!

It is possible to have a lump after injection that will settle in a couple of days but it's clear to see in these pictures these are lumps!

These lumps didn't subside post treatment and they didn't reduce when massaged! These lips needed correcting and even though this was 3 years ago - the lumps are still there but are now camouflaged with more filler to even out the top lip. When the filler breaks down, the lumps become noticeable.

The most annoying thing about this botched procedure is everytime I fly - YES, you read that right - these are my lips!

Everytime I fly, my top lip swells. For the first year it was so embarrassing and despite being annoyed, it really got to me and was always noticeable on landing! I didn't inject myself either! Just in case anyone thinks I did! This was the work of a medical professional. I put trust into someone to inject me as I feel more comfortable with someone else do it rather than me attempting to do it! Hindsight!

It took weeks for these lips to settle...Initially, I couldn't eat or drink unless it was through a straw! With the swelling brought pain and my best friend for a week was Codeine!

The bruises on the lips are needle marks! Notice the horrendous swelling of the top lip! It made the lip look distorted!

When the initial swelling subsided and the lumps had settled a tad - the lumps were still visible. Below is just before they were corrected with additional filler to camouflage the lumps. I had another medical colleague fix these. Worked well!

I've decided to share these pictures now to warn people about the importance of researching the treatment, researching the person that's treating you and to ensure that they're medical with expertise, knowledge and experience. Don't accept practitioners that can talk the talk but cannot walk the walk!

Im not naming and shaming, I'm a professional but this did happen and while the topic of lip fillers is trending due to celebs like Kylie Jenner, I want to highlight that this procedure can go wrong!

Non Surgical doesn't mean it's safer than Surgery and it certainly doesn't come without risks and potential complications but getting the correct aftercare is key! This highlights that anyone can have botched procedures - I'm a medical professional working in this industry - I call it the lived experience but it's how it's dealt with afterwards is the important factor!

I had to sort myself out - the injecting practitioner didn't want to know! Enough said! Mistakes can and do happen, To Err is Human but as I said its how the complications are handled that is crucial. This separates the men from the boys!

You guys only have 1 face, don't let the cowboys ruin it! Research and if you're in doubt don't proceed! X

COPD Charity Concert

This is the third year that the Benbulben COPD Support Group in Sligo held a charity concert to raise badly needed funds for the Respiratory Ward of Sligo Regional Hospital.

The Claudia McGloin Clinic once again provided lots of prizes for the evenings raffles.

When people entered the event, they were given a wee pack of Haribo sweets with a raffle ticket attached for a free raffle. There were three prizes of Restylane Recover Cream up for grabs.

There were also other prizes on offer and the evening was a huge success. Claudia McGloin was even the door woman 😂

The Claudia McGloin Clinic are delighted to support and sponsor this charity throughout the year. It's an amazing cause and great to see the members do so much for their medical condition, the hospital and for the members.

Until their next event in November...

Creams that act like Botulinum Toxin Injections

We've been asked this question time and time again - does a cream work the same way as Botox???

FACT - there is NO lotion, potion or cream on the market that can ever work the same as a Botulinum Toxin Injection!

The injections are into the muscle and let's face it, no cream is going to penetrate that deep or even paralyse the muscles!

There are lots of over the counter gimmicks which are not cheap but please be aware you are wasting your money.

There are however, some temporary solutions by adding a sticky egg white like substance which reduces puffiness and wrinkles but only for a couple of hours!

That said if you want a good longer lasting result which will actually do as it says, injections are the ONLY solution!

You must always ensure that you have researched this procedure and that the person injecting you is a medical professional with expertise, knowledge and training in this area and is insured! Also ensure for your safety that you are in a medical clinic!

Finalist in The Blog Awards Ireland 2015

Absolutely delighted to be a finalist in The Blog Awards Ireland 2015.

Skin Care Sales...

One of the big misconceptions that people have about Skin Specialists is that we are sales people trying to sell Skin Care Products to you as well as Skin Treatments. This couldn't be further from the truth! I'm a Medical Professional with little sales experience apart from a short time working part time at weekends in Penney's in Sligo while I was in secondary school!

I do sell Skin Care at the clinic but I also sell a variety of Medical Brands so, I'm not affiliated to one particular company. I personally mix and match but I'm using what's suited to my Skin and I tailor each product to individual needs by prescribing what is needed for your Skin Type and Skin Condition.

I have researched Medical Skin Care not only for myself but for my patients and clients so, that I can bring you the very best of treatments to the clinic. I have tried and tested them all and am happy to say that only brands that I feel comfortable using on my face and ones that work will be ones that I use daily in the clinic.

The truth is the Skin Care compliments the Skin Treatments giving you better results. I only ever use clinically proven products and the results of these products used either on their own or following treatments speak for themselves.

You don't need to have several Skin products at home and you certainly don't need to spend hours in the bathroom in the morning or at night! A simple but effective Skin Care routine is all you need to keep your Skin looking fresh, healthy and hydrated. Not many people know this but the most important Skin Care product is actually an SPF - Sun Protection Factor.

At the Claudia McGloin Clinic, we can tailor a good simple yet effective Skin Care routine for you and help you achieve the flawless radiant complexion you've always wanted all year round.

Contact us for further details or to book a Skin Consultation.

Get Your Skin Autumn Ready with Skinboosters

You can't go back in time but your skin can.

Inevitably, our skin quality deteriorates over time. Our ways, our habits, our genes and even the weather are all factors that influence the state of our skin. For some the impact is major, for others it's less so but for all of us the change is (or will be) apparent. Skinboosters, consisting of Hyaluronic Acid are a way of naturally revitalising the skin, making you look the age you feel.

It may sound like magic but we call it science.

Over time, the quality of your skin changes - collagen and elastic fibres disintegrate and the spread and function of the body's own Hyaluronic acid changes, making your skin drier, rougher and less elastic. While many beauty products and treatments pamper your skin on the surface to treat these symptoms, Skinboosters restore from within. They create luminous skin in a natural way by gently and naturally smoothing the skin from the inside. By adding Hyaluronic acid through injections under the skin surface, Skinboosters restore the hydro balance and improve the structure, firmness and elasticity of the skin, giving it new energy.

Skinboosters can be used to not only improve the general skin quality of your face but also to improve exposed and sensitive areas such as your neck, décolletage and hands as as areas with Acne-Scarred Skin. Skinboosters can also be used proactively which makes them a suitable beauty treatment even for those not yet experiencing the full effects of ageing skin.

A Skinboosters treatment is more about care than correction and the results are visible without changing the shape of your face. Clinical studies demonstrate that Skinboosters significantly increase skin elasticity and improve skin structure. Thinner, fragile skin also becomes thicker and firmer to better withstand the wear and tear of everyday life. Skinboosters are not surgical and they are not toxins. They are a natural beauty method to restore and maintain your skins quality and lustre.

Unlike wrinkle correction, treatment with Skinboosters is a process in which the skin quality is gradually built up through injections of multiple micro-deposits of long lasting Hyaluronic acid just under the skin. Though many of the beneficial effects can be seen after one treatment, three 'start up' sessions, two to four weeks apart are necessary to give full results.

The day I injected Count Dracula himself...

So everyone knows how much I love Dracula PRP Therapy and if you didn't - you do now! The results I get from these treatments are phenomenal but little did I know the real test would come in treating the pioneer of PRP Dr Daniel Sister.

Daniel had a fall and fractured his Radial Head - Elbow in layman's terms!

When I met him recently in London for a joint interview we were doing with a magazine, he was still complaining of pain in his Elbow.  He had also lost some movement and despite exercising, he was unable to bring his Elbow upwards towards his face! It was PRP time!

I injected him 3 times - directly into the Elbow joint at the fracture site and the other two times directly into the muscles in his forearm. He was a model patient and didn't flinch despite the pain he was in! That's good considering we medical professionals make the worst patients!

Daniel called me the next day to tell me he was actually holding the phone to his ear! He had noted a huge improvement 6 hours after treatment! We were amazed at how quickly he was seeing results but we both knew that PRP was amazing! I've seen dramatic improvements with PRP and Sports Injuries & Spinal conditions but each time I do a treatment it still blows my mind at how quickly people are seeing results!

Daniel has continued to notice improvement and is about 90% better today! Here's the link to Daniel's blog about his experience

Open Disclosure is key to Patient Safety even in the Aesthetic Industry

Patients have a right to be safe no matter what procedure they are having done or where they are having it done be it a public or private hospital or clinic. Patients should not be receiving medical procedures in their own home or in beauty salons, hairdressers or even hotels etc. A clinical environment that is medically equipped to deal with complications and adverse reactions is paramount!

Patient Safety is a huge passion of mine especially since I suffered from Wrong Site Surgery in 2007. At that time I worked for the NHS but as I now work in the Aesthetic industry, I know it is just as important that we get regulations in place and change our guidelines to keep our patients safe. I was also unfortunate to have have botched lip fillers so, I know what it is like to be on the receiving end of treatments going wrong!

I have been hugely involved in Patient Safety matters in Ireland for the past 3 years and have recently completed Patient Safety Courses and Open Disclosure Training. While these are geared to the public health industry the HSE or the NHS - I have now started to develop training seminars for the Aesthetic and Cosmetic Industry based on the same principles as no matter where we work - WE are still Medical Professionals and must carry out Open Disclosure and ensure Patient Safety DAILY for ALL of our patients.

Honesty is key when dealing with patients, why? Because it is the right thing to do. We are taught on the first day of training to 'FIRST DO NO HARM' so, we must continue with this in all areas of our practice. Being Open and Honest with patients is a huge part of a seamless service. It's not just about being Open and Honest when things go wrong - it's about being honest from the start.

The consultation process is an extremely important part for the patient and that is why at the Claudia McGloin Clinic we charge for ours and don't offer FREE consultations as we are not sales people and are not trying hard to make a sale. We are looking for the best solution for the individual patient needs. We strongly believe that patients need to research as well prior to their treatment. They should ask as many questions as possible and if they feel in their gut that something is not right, then they should not proceed with the treatment.

I was delighted to see that the GMC are looking to change guidelines for Doctors and just hope that the other regulatory bodies such as the NMC follow suit. I strongly believe that if we all sing from the same hymn sheet and do the best we can for the safety of our patients, then we can overcome the cowboys in this industry and keep it safe for all.

Patient Review following Rejuvula

WOW WOW WOW - Rejuvula has completely changed my world.
I've been a client of Claudia's for the past two years and I’ve had a number of treatments at her clinic including Dracula Therapy (PRP), dermal fillers and PDO threads. When she told me about her new treatment for vagina rejuvenation I was intrigued and fascinated.
I'm getting married in a couple of months and decided to have the treatment as a special treat for my husband to be! This is my second marriage, and I want my sex life with my new husband to be as exciting as if we’d met in our twenties. But the fact is I’ve had three kids since then, and things down there are not quite they used to be!
I started to notice some changes in sensations on my way home but the next morning, OMG, it was heightened & sex was amazing! I have never felt such an intense orgasm before. I'd highly recommend this treatment to anyone looking for a new lease of live in the bedroom!

Irritable Bowel Syndrome IBS

Irritable Bowel Syndrome or IBS as it is more commonly known is a condition of the Digestive System. It can cause bouts of Stomach Cramps, Bloating, Diarrhoea and Constipation. While Irritable Bowel Syndrome is a common condition that affects both men and women, it can also be misdiagnosed! Irritable Bowel Syndrome can affect anyone but usually symptoms are noticed between the ages of 20-30. People who suffer with Irritable Bowel Syndrome can experience these symptoms in bouts which are often during times of stress and after eating certain foods. One major characteristic of Irritable Bowel Syndrome is fluctuating transit time. This is when food travels too quickly through the Digestive System. The undigested food particles can irritate the gut causing it to empty suddenly. Irritable Bowel Syndrome can also co-exist with Premenstrual Syndrome and has also been associated with Fibromyalgia.

What causes Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS)?

The exact cause of Irritable Bowel Syndrome is unknown but it has been linked to a sensitivity of the gut. There are however several triggers that can exacerbate the condition. Some of these are:
·
      Stress
·         Intestinal Parasites
·         Poor Digestion
·         Food Sensitivity or Food Intolerance
·         Feeling Emotionally Low
·         Being Physically Run Down
·         Bowel Infection
·         Candida
·         Disorders of the Nervous System
·         Drug Side Effects
·         Gynaecological Problems
·         Inadequate Digestive Enzymes
·         Nutrient Deficiencies
·         Poor Diet
·         Surgery

The Intestine is connected to the Brain. Signals go back and forth between the Bowel and Brain. These signals affect bowel function and symptoms. The nerves can become more active during stress causing the intestines to be more sensitive and contract more.

Symptoms of Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS)

The symptoms of Irritable Bowel Syndrome can vary from person to person but most people will experience Diarrhoea, Constipation or both. The symptoms of Irritable Bowel Syndrome tend to be worse after eating and tend to come and go in bouts. Many people will have a flare up of their symptoms which can last from 1 day up to 4 days.

The most common symptoms of Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) are:
·
Abdominal Pain and Cramping – which can be relieved following a bowel movement
·         A change in bowel habit - such as Diarrhoea, Constipation or Both
·         Bloating and Swelling of the Abdomen
·         Excessive Wind (Flatulence)
·         An urgent need to go to the toilet
·         A feeling that you need to open your bowels even if you have just been to the toilet
·         A feeling you have not fully emptied your bowels
·         Passing mucus from your back passage (bottom)
Due to the embarrassment, pain and discomfort of Irritable Bowel Syndrome, many people with the condition also have feelings of Depression and Anxiety.

Diagnosing Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS)

There are no specific tests for Irritable Bowel Syndrome because it does not cause any obvious detectable abnormalities in your Digestive System. If you have the symptoms of Irritable Bowel Syndrome your GP will not always need to order blood tests to help diagnose you. However, in some cases they may recommend blood tests to rule out other conditions that cause similar symptoms such as an Infection or Coeliac Disease (a stomach condition caused by Gluten Intolerance). Irritable Bowel Syndrome is usually diagnosed by carrying out a physical examination and checking whether your symptoms match those typical of the condition.

Treatment for irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS)

The symptoms of Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) can often be reduced by changing your diet and lifestyle. In some cases, medication or psychological treatments may also be helpful. Proof that YOU can be your own PR

It's been just over one week or 9 days to be precise since I attended Antonia Mariconda's 'How to be your own PR' for Medical Professionals which was held at 64 Knighstbridge in London. This was my second PR workshop of Antonia's to attend and I knew that if it was anything like the first one then I wouldn't be disappointed. I wasn't! Antonia shares her extensive knowledge and offers great advice and tips on 'How to be your own PR'.

Part of the workshop included a pitch to a journalist from the Daily Mail. When the workshop started, Antonia asked us to say a couple of words about who we were & what we did - I said I was a 'Vagina Rejuvenator'! It got the journalists attention and as Antonia predicted would lead to bigger things.

And it has...Today, my pitch was turned into a fabulous article and was published in the Daily Mail.

Rejuvula, is a brand new treatment for Vaginal Rejuvenation that I created with Dr Daniel Sister. It involves using Dracula PRP Therapy to enhance sexual response and help with urine incontinence.

This is certainly proof that you can be your own PR and that you can achieve great things when you put your mind to it. A great pitch will take you far!

I highly recommend Antonia's PR workshops and it certainly helped me to get published!

Graduation Ceremony for HIQA and IHI Patient Safety Course

Last week I was invited to attend a graduation ceremony at the Health Information and Quality Authority (HIQA) head office in Smithfields in Dublin. This was for the Patient Safety course that I did last year with HIQA and the Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI).

It was nice to meet everyone that had done the course. The group was so big that they had to separate the graduation into 2 groups. It was a nice day and unfortunately, I didn't get to take any pictures! The graduation cake was amazing!

I'm delighted to have completed this course and it has really helped me with my business and work within the Medical Aesthetic Industry. I can really use these tools to develop my practice as a nurse but also in helping with my Patients for Patient Safety role with the World Health Organisation (WHO).

Patient Safety is my passion and I am delighted to be apart of an amazing group of people that want to make a difference to the healthcare of Irish patients.

1 week with Invisalign Braces

I cannot believe it's been 1 week since I had my Invisalign Braces fitted and I cannot believe I've stuck it out and am still wearing them!

If you missed my last blog, I have been struggling with these braces :( I've been in a lot of pain, the braces are tight and I've mouth sores! I've also been struggling to remove them especially the bottom brace.

I can say 1 week on it is getting better in so far as it's easier to remove the braces but I'm still struggling with eating and drinking. I'm going the whole day without anything other than water and take them off when I'm at home for 2 hours to eat, drink and clean them. I'm sure I've lost weight as well in the week! :)

Looking at my teeth you wouldn't know they were there but I do feel like I'm still holding my mouth in a different way and slurring a bit with a lisp! Funny thing is I know that people may not have noticed but it still feels weird to me!

I think I've also noticed that one tooth has turned a bit - that'll be why it was so bloody sore!

I didn't think I'd be able to continue with them after last week but it is getting better and I'm going to persevere with it!
